Gua Kelam

Kaki Bukit, 02200 Kaki Bukit, Perlis

History

Discovered in 1935 by an Englishman who discovered the flow of water in a cave could be used to move iron ore from a nearby mine. The only way to the cave is through a suspension bridge made of eight-foot-wide wood. This bridge connects Kaki Bukit to Wang Tangga, a valley at the opposite end of Gua Kelam. This suspension bridge was built to facilitate the movement of tin miners from Wang Tangga to Gua Kelam. This cave used to be the connecting road for Wang Kelian residents (Malaysia-Thailand border area, near Satun city, Thailand) with Kaki Bukit town Named Gua Kelam in conjunction with its condition and position at the foot of the hill, in addition to the gloomy atmosphere that always envelops this cave. According to historical facts, the name of Gua Kelam was given by the tin miners some time ago in conjunction with the darkness of the cave itself. They had to use carbide lamps to illuminate the cave area.
